How to Watch Twitch on Roku Devices? Twitch is one of the biggest live streaming platforms for gamers. However, the creators on the platform have slowly ventured and adapted to other types of broadcasts as well, including IRL (in real life) streams, eSports leagues, creative curriculums, music, and live sports broadcasts.
Twitch has seen massive growth in userbase and new content creators in recent years. Besides, the average number of concurrent Twitch viewers is 2.78 million, according to the official reports. Compared to YouTube and Facebook Gaming, Twitch offers far better features that make it easier for streamers to interact with their viewers.
If you are interested in gaming, you probably also follow your favorite streamers and content creators on Twitch. Whether it’s xQcOW, shroud, Ninja, summit1g, pokimane, TimTheTatman, or someone else, sometimes you just want to chill out on your couch and watch your favorite Twitch streamers on a bigger screen.
Since you are here now, you also happen to have a Roku device and looking for a way to watch Twitch on Roku. Keep following this guide as we extensively discuss how Roku users can get access to Twitch streams.
Can you Get Twitch on Roku?
Well, the answer is quite complicated. Amazon discontinued its official Twitch app from the Roku Channel Store a few months ago. Then, several unofficial private channels popped up that also stopped working after a while.
Users who added the official Twitch channel to their Roku device before the removal could use it for some time until it was retracted entirely by Roku.
Fortunately, worldreboot on GitHub has been working on a new unofficial Twitch client named Twoku (Twitch Reloaded) for Roku devices. The channel is still in an alpha phase, and it has a few bugs. However, most of the essential features work properly, which we have listed below.
- You can browse through stream categories and live channels by viewer count.
- Twoku lets you log in to your Twitch account and view the list of streamers you follow.
- You can discover Twitch channels from the Search menu (suggestions don’t work correctly as of now).
- Alongside live streams, you can also read the Twitch chat on the side of the screen.
- You can browse and play popular clips from the past seven days.
- VOD streams can be played as intended (unless it’s a subscriber-only VOD).
Compared to other unofficial Twitch channels on Roku, Twoku offers a much cleaner user interface. It’s also significantly better than the official Twitch channel that is now defunct.
How to Get Twoku (Unofficial Twitch Channel) on Roku?
The official Twitch Roku channel is not available on the Roku Channel Store anymore, so we will have to use Twoku as an alternative. Since Twoku is a private Roku channel, you will have to manually add it to your Roku account. Here’s how to do it:
- First, open a new browser tab and visit roku.com/account/add
- Now sign in to your Roku account by entering the associated email address and password. Verify the reCAPTCHA and click Sign in to continue.
- Once you are signed in, you will be prompted to enter the channel access code, Enter “twoku” (without the quotes) in the empty field and click the Add channel
- A warning dialog box should appear immediately regarding the non-verified channel. Click OK to dismiss it and continue to the next page.
- Finally, click the button that says, “Yes, add channel” to add Twoku to your Roku account.
After you see the “Channel added” message on the webpage, boot up your Roku device and make sure that it’s connected to the internet. You should see Twoku in the channels list on the Roku Home screen after a while.
In case you don’t see Twoku on the list, go to the Settings menu and scroll down to the System option. After that, click System update on the following menu, then click Check now. Twoku will be added to the channels list on your Roku device.
How to watch Twitch on Roku with Twoku?
As we previously mentioned, Twoku is probably the best unofficial Twitch channel for Roku right now. Although it’s a private channel, you can open it like a regular Roku channel upon adding it to your Roku account.
When you launch Twoku for the first time, you will be sent to the main page immediately. One of the best things about Twoku is that it doesn’t ask you to log in to your Twitch account, but you can do it from the Login option anyways.
All you have to do is enter your username, and Twoku will automatically fetch the list of all the channels you follow. You won’t even have to enter your password. The channels should appear on the left sidebar.
From the Categories section of Twoku, you can browse through the genres and games you are interested in. You can also go to the Search menu to search for your favorite streamers or categories using the on-screen keyboard. The Live Channels section lets you explore popular live streams by viewership.
Furthermore, Twoku lets you rewind and fast-forward the Twitch streams just by using the Roku remote, which is a cool feature nonetheless.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the questions you might have regarding Twitch on Roku:
Q1. Can I use chat while watching Twitch streams from the Twoku channel?
Twoku doesn’t let Roku users chat directly from the channel when playing back streams.
However, the feature might get added in the future. For now, you will have to open the Twitch app on your smartphone and use the chat feature to interact with your favorite streamers.
Q2. Are there any viable alternatives to Twoku?
No. Twitched and Twitched Zero was quite popular unofficial Twitch channels for Roku devices until Twitch Interactive asked Roku to remove them from the Roku Channel Store.
The TTV Stream channel is now discontinued as well. At the time of this writing, Twoku is still the best unofficial alternative to the Twitch Roku channel.
Q3. Is it possible to cast streams from the Twitch Android / iOS app on a Roku device?
Unfortunately, the official Twitch app on Android and iOS devices only support Chromecast and AirPlay devices. You won’t be able to cast Twitch streams from the app to your Roku device.
